I met Cam in the driveway. His beard was scruffy from sleep, his eyes calm with excitement. The 2:00am sky was purple with light. Violet’s birthday. Lyla’s big sister day. Mamina’s day.

Inside, the night light was bright. Archie was surprisingly easy to calm. I checked the monitor. Lyla was snug. All was sound. I lifted the shiny foil to find homemade rice krispie treats dotted with mini M&Ms. Sweet! She cut em’ big. Yes!

I snagged a treat and brewed a pot of coffee. I chose the biggest vessel I could find from the cabinet and filled it whole milk and coffee. I settled in under the Scottish wool blanket and took warm sips of the sweet drink. The rice krispie treat tasted good. Each bite tasting more and more indulgent; more and more fitting of the day. Rice krispie treats and coffee. A befitting way to greet Violet’s birthday.
